Justification of Memorization
The pieces i have chose to memorize are the Gettysburg Address and Shakespeare’s Sonnet 55. I chose, first, the Gettysburg address because i believe it is a speech that should be remembered due to having been spoken by one of Americas greatest leaders. I believe that Lincoln shows his greatness in this piece when referring to earlier dates of great happenings to fuel his beliefs, “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” Another reason i chose the Gettysburg address was because it was said for those directly associated with those who were fighting for a cause worth fighting for in the civil war. The next piece I chose to do, Sonnet 55 by William Shakespeare, I chose to do because Shakespeare is considered by a lot of people to be one of the greatest play writer/poet of all time(although it’s kind of annoying how most things he wrote about were women). The sonnet gives away that it is about a woman in the third line when it says, “But you shall shine more bright in these contents.”
