Justification of Memorization

The pieces i have chose to memorize are the Gettysburg Address and Shakespeare’s Sonnet 55. I chose, first, the Gettysburg address because i believe it is a speech that should be remembered due to having been spoken by one of Americas greatest leaders. I believe that Lincoln shows his greatness in this piece when referring to earlier dates of great happenings to fuel his beliefs, “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” Another reason i chose the Gettysburg address was because it was said for those directly associated with those who were fighting for a cause worth fighting for in the civil war. The next piece I chose to do, Sonnet 55 by William Shakespeare, I chose to do because Shakespeare is considered by a lot of people to be one of the greatest play writer/poet of all time(although it’s kind of annoying how most things he wrote about were women). The sonnet gives away that it is about a woman in the third line when it says, “But you shall shine more bright in these contents.”

Book Cover Evaluation

May 21st, 2008 by luke11590 in Uncategorized · No Comments

Most of the Covers show fire burning away books. The fire is also shown by itself with nothing else to burn, as if just existing to only burn whatever you give it. I noticed a sort of man made out of a bunch of pages out of books, or perhaps this character is clothed in a suit of pages. This man on fire does not seem to be caring of the fire burning away at him. On a few of the covers there is a character depicted who almost looks to be a firefighter but in actuality is spreading the fire. the story that the covers tell me is that there are a group of people that are against books and have gained the authority to burn the books they find. The one book cover that describes the most to me is the cover with the futuristic looking fire starter burning a bunch of books with what looks like a team of other fire starters in the background.

Fallacies!

April 26th, 2008 by luke11590 in Uncategorized · No Comments

#1) “My roommate said her philosophy class was hard, and the one I’m in is hard, too. All philosophy classes must be hard!” Two people’s experiences are, in this case, not enough on which to base a conclusion.

#2) “The seriousness of a punishment should match the seriousness of the crime. Right now, the punishment for drunk driving may simply be a fine. But drunk driving is a very serious crime that can kill innocent people. So the death penalty should be the punishment for drunk driving.” The argument actually supports several conclusions—”The punishment for drunk driving should be very serious,” in particular—but it doesn’t support the claim that the death penalty, specifically, is warranted.

#3) “President Jones raised taxes, and then the rate of violent crime went up. Jones is responsible for the rise in crime.” The increase in taxes might or might not be one factor in the rising crime rates, but the argument hasn’t shown us that one caused the other.

“There is little to no value in recognizing students for academic achievements. Education isn’t about competition; the whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.” (the final clause was written by Sydney J. Harris)

I believe that this statement could not be more false. There is so much that can be told from recognized academically successful students. For one students that have been recognized usually can refer to the topic in which they were recognized to show experience in that subject. Second students recognized will understand that they do well and should perhaps pursue a career related to said recognized subject. So overall i believe that students should be recognized because it helps them recognize a strength that they have.
